"Star Wars: Skywalker Strikes Back" has a new release date on Disney Plus. Those familiar with Star Wars and its fans should not be surprised by that date.
Before we go any further, a reminder: The Rise of Skywalker will be available exclusively on Disney Plus and not on Netflix. Details:
Yes, to no one's surprise, Disney has announced (in an email sent to the press) that "Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker" will be available on Disney Plus on May 4. Yes, this day, commonly referred to as "Star Wars Day," is the very day that the final chapter of the Skywalker saga will appear.
Episode 9 is part of the "Star Wars Day" Disney Plus lineup, which also includes the first episode of the eight-part documentary series "Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian" and the series finale of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" are also included.
This is slightly below the typical six-month window that other Disney films have seen between theatrical release and the start of Disney Plus, as seen with the Aladdin and Lion King remakes. However, this is a special case of Star Wars Day; what other date would make sense?
The Rise of Skywalker will be available for digital streaming on March 17 and on Blu-ray on March 31. For more information, see our guide to Star Wars movies in order.
