With the season finale of “Penguins” airing last night, it may have seemed that Colin Farrell's role as Oz Cobb was over. But it seems his swan (penguin) song has yet to be sung.
Despite repeatedly commenting to the contrary, Farrell recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he is open to returning as the titular villain of the “Batman” series, provided the crime drama continues for an additional season. 'Of course I would do it.'
“The Penguin” has been a big hit with fans, drawing 10.4 million viewers in the series premiere in September alone, surpassing numbers for series like “The Last of Us” and “House of Dragons.” The second episode gained even more viewers, and the number of viewers continued to grow as time went on.
Despite the success and acclaim from fans and critics alike, Farrell openly complained about spending three hours each day on the role. I never want to wear that shitty suit and that shitty head again,” he told Total Film in an interview. Will Farrell, one of Gotham's most notorious criminals, ever find the motivation to put on the suit again?
The answer is “yes.”
“If I have a great idea and the script is really robust and as strong or stronger than the first season, of course I would do it,” he told THR, citing the fans' enthusiastic response to the series as one of the biggest reasons to do it again.
“For me, the bar for success is not so high. It's whether a lot of people like it or not. -
“For me, the hurdle to success is not so high,” Farrell explained. I like to be in films that are critically acclaimed, and that's much better than being in one that isn't.”
This is a much less offensive mindset than it seemed when Farrell was detailing the frustrations he experienced in order to become Cobb with each passing day of filming.
“Don't get me wrong, I loved the film. Toward the end of the day, I was bitching to everybody, 'I can't wait for it to be over.'"
‘I was just so happy that it was over,’ he said.
He added that “I tried to remind them that I have a ‘grumpy appreciation’ for them,” and that he “feels privileged” to be part of Penguin's “lineage” beginning with the 1960s “Batman” TV series.
The fan reaction to the crime drama's premiere and the explosive conclusion of Season 1 seems to have changed Farrell's attitude significantly. Perhaps he was simply venting his frustration when frustration got the better of him.
Despite Farrell's desire to put his sleeves on the suit again, let's not count penguins before they hatch. As of now, there are no plans for a “Penguin” Season 2 - at least, no official announcement from HBO at this time. It may not even make sense to continue with the next installment, as the finale seemingly ended the series cleanly.
The storyline of Cobb's rise to power feels more like a one-off series, much like series like the films “The Sopranos” and “The Godfather” rather than a traditional “Batman” show. However, that does not mean that Farrell is not likely to return as Cobb. If “Penguin” Season 2 doesn't happen, the character may be revisited in another “Batman” related project by Matt Reeves.
According to Interview magazine, Reeves said that he and HBO “are talking about doing other shows,” pointing to the possibility of other TV-related spin-offs that could fit within the “Batman” worldview.
“I think the idea of being able to put a lens on these characters is really exciting,” Reeves said. 'The city and its dysfunction, and the world and its dysfunction. Gotham is a place that deserves better. [and] you get to experience an epic crime saga that's almost like a novel. Oz has an Oz story. So the Oz story is the Oz story, and the idea is to do the same with the other stories.”
So while nothing definitive is yet known about “Penguin” Season 2, there is a good chance that Farrell will return as this fan favorite character. Or at the very least, we may see another series rise from the ashes of this one. With “Batman: Part II” coming out in 2026, now is a good time to start brainstorming how this series could continue to expand with a spin-off series. For now, the good news is that Farrell is ready and able to return if necessary.
