According to recent leaks, the upcoming iPhone 17 Air is facing technical issues and may be thicker than expected.
The iPhone 17 Air, also known as the iPhone 17 Slim, has been rumored to be the thinnest of Apple's phones. While we never heard actual numbers, there were indications that it would be significantly thinner than the iPhone 16's 7.8 mm depth. However, a recent leak revealed by MacRumors suggests that it may not be the thinnest iPhone ever.
The leak was originally attributed to Yeux1122 and posted on their Naver blog. According to the “industry source” quoted, Apple had resorted to manufacturing the battery on a thinner substrate to keep the iPhone thin. However, technical problems and increased costs have hindered this development. As a result, Apple has decided to revert to the older iPhone 17 Air battery.
This older battery, which is estimated to be about 6 mm thick, will limit the thinness of the iPhone. In addition to this, Apple is reportedly holding off on adopting a smaller 2nm chip, and rumors suggest that Apple will continue to use a thicker 3nm chip until the iPhone 18. The exact size is not known, but it would be difficult to make it smaller than the iPhone 6's 6.9mm, the thinnest iPhone ever.
There is considerable information available so far about the iPhone 17 Air, including a 6.7-inch OLED panel with a new technology called touch and display driver integration. There are also reports that the iPhone 17 Air, along with other iPhone 17 models, will have an Apple Wi-Fi chip and up to 12 GB of RAM.
The iPhone 17 Air may not be the thinnest phone ever, but we would take this leak with a grain of salt. We wouldn't be surprised if Apple finds a way to overcome this kind of problem, and at this point there is every indication that this phone will be thinner than all the best iPhones.
