Netflix Announces New Must-See Drama Film - 94% Rating on Rotten Tomatoes

Rob Pease, a biographical drama written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is now available for streaming on Netflix. The film's arrival on the streaming service is noteworthy because its critical and audience reception has been so impressive.

Unfortunately, while “Rob Peace” received positive reviews upon its theatrical release in August, it struggled to garner significant attention and was overshadowed by the summer blockbusters. However, now that it is available for streaming on Netflix, it has finally received the attention it deserves and could make it into the top 10 most-watched films on the service.

If you're looking for something really quality to watch this week, “Rob Peace” is one of the strongest additions to Netflix in November 2024, and it's definitely worth a spot on your watch list.

Adapted from the 2014 biography “The Brief and Tragic Life of Robert Peace” by Jeff Hobbs, “Rob Pease” is inspired by the true story of Rob Pease (Jay Will), a talented young man torn between his efforts to find a better life and his family ties.

Raised by a hardworking and devoted mother (Mary J. Blige), Rob is a high-achieving student at Yale University with a bright future. However, this loyalty to his father will ultimately cost him everything.

“Rob Peace” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this past January and had a very limited theatrical release over the summer. Critical reception during this period was generally favorable. It currently holds a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a Certified Fresh endorsement.

Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com described “Rob Peace” as “the kind of film that doesn't get made very often anymore,” while Rovia Jaquai of The Hollywood Reporter noted that “despite its traditional framework, it evokes genuine emotions.”

Benjamin Lee of The Guardian noted that “Rob's transformation from stereotype to human being is due to Will's fine work and Ejiofor's unwavering commitment to capturing a full life, which Rob's mother supported off-screen.” Tim Grierson of Screen International, however, offered a somewhat less positive opinion. In his attempt to dramatize Rob Pease's complicated life, “Rob Pease” ended up being a mere quagmire.

The overall consensus among critics is solid, if not spectacular, but audiences seem to really like the drama. Rob Peace received a very high rating of 94% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, with user reviews describing it as a “must see,” as well as “compelling,” “beautiful,” and “thought-provoking.”

“Rob Pease” is available on Netflix today, Monday, November 11, and if you are looking for a quality drama, you won't want to miss this one. If you are familiar with the true story of Rob Pease, you already know how this tragic tale will end.
