Another weekend is upon us, which means a slew of great new movies on the best streaming services. But with so many great choices to choose from, it can quickly become a headache to narrow down your next movie viewing when all you want to do is grab some popcorn, curl up on the couch and relax. [That's where Tom's Guide comes in. We've rounded up only the best of the new movies just released for streaming that deserve a spot on your viewing list. Topping the list this week are two terrifying horror films that came out late on Halloween: Hulu's “Alien: Romulus” and pay-per-view video-on-demand's “Smile 2.” More seasonal is the steamy new romantic comedy “The Merry Gentlemen” on Netflix.

Just in time for the holiday season, the dreaded Xenomorph has invaded Hulu. Alien: Romulus is the latest installment in Ridley Scott's tense sci-fi thriller series that takes the franchise back to its roots. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the film is set between the events of the previous two films and follows a group of young colonists from outer space who embark on their biggest fishing expedition yet, only to find that they get more than they bargained for.

While scouring an abandoned spaceship for a cryostat, the last component needed to fulfill their dream of escaping to an idyllic, distant planet, the group comes face-to-face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Alien: Romulus is a rare revival of a franchise film.

Netflix has been on a roll lately with holiday romance movies, and this latest is no exception. And there's no better way to celebrate Christmas than with a steamy musical revue. In “Merry Gentlemen,” Britt Robertson stars as Ashley Davis. Ashley is a small-town professional dancer who hasn't been home for the holidays since landing a high-profile role in the hit Jingle Bells show.

But when her parents' performance venue is in danger of going out of business due to massive debt, she comes up with a plan to change its fortunes. To raise funds, she plans a Christmas-themed, all-male revue and convinces charming local handyman Luke (Chad Michael Murray) to take center stage. From Academy Award-winning director Steve McQueen, a mother and son are torn apart during the German blitzkrieg that hit London during World War II. Saoirse Ronan stars as Rita Hanway, a London factory worker who, like many wartime parents, is faced with an impossible decision: to keep her 9-year-old son George (Elliot Heffernan) out of danger, she puts him on a train to wait out the fighting in the relative safety of the English countryside.

But even that explanation is of no comfort to George, and he flees the train at once and returns to East London, where he is reunited with his mother and grandfather (Paul Weller). Along the way, he stumbles from one nightmare to the next as his worried mother searches for him and discovers a new sense of community back home.

It's not often that a sequel surpasses the original, especially in horror films. However, “Smile 2” manages to impress with fun changes to the factors that made its 2022 predecessor a surprise box office hit. Set a few days after the previous film, “Smile 2” stars Naomi Scott (“Charlie's Angels”) as Sky Riley, a pop star preparing for a comeback tour one year after the tragic accident that killed her boyfriend. [But just as she is about to step back into the limelight, a drug dealer (Lucas Gage) cruelly kills himself in front of her, with that characteristic cursed smile on his face. You know what that means: Skye is now haunted by a sinister smiling figure everywhere she goes, and if she doesn't find a way to break the curse within a week, she will suffer the same gruesome fate.

After making an impact at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, this documentary by Sahari Mani, director of “A Thousand Girls Like Me,” has since been released on Apple TV Plus earlier this month, It has received an impressive rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Malala Yousafzai, Bread & Roses examines the plight of Afghan women after the fall of Kabul by the Taliban in 2021.

The film follows in real time the personal journeys of three courageous Afghan women fighting to regain their autonomy while living under an oppressive regime. By unflinchingly depicting their harrowing plight as they struggle to escape a suffocating new normal, Mani captures the spirit and resilience of Afghan women and brings their story to the global stage.
