Before I cut to the chase, I want to make it clear that “Fromm” is one of my favorite shows of all time. In fact, I think it is the best dark thriller currently on television. Someone recommended it to me by accident and I've been hooked ever since. But as much as I love the show, that passion has also raised concerns about the show's future.
The recent renewal of Fromm for a fourth season is obviously exciting news. Its growing popularity seems likely to keep it from being censored. However, as Season 3 approaches its finale, I can't shake the feeling that the show may not be moving forward so boldly.
Renewals are great news, but I can't ignore my growing concerns about the future of “Fromm” and how the plot will remain consistently engaging. Spoilers for “From” Season 3 ahead.
One of “Fromm's” greatest strengths is its ability to keep viewers guessing. Its mysterious setting and complex lore make it a standout in the genre. However, as season three draws to a close, there is a growing sense that “Frome” may have too many mysteries.
The show has introduced many fascinating threads, from the origins of the town and the purpose of the mysterious creatures to the cryptic symbols and inexplicable events that some characters experience. However, rather than weaving them into a coherent narrative, it seems to keep adding more. The result. The unanswered questions keep piling up, and frankly, I'm getting frustrated.
There is the mystery surrounding Fatima's (Pega Gafori) unsettling pregnancy and her encounter with a woman in a ghostly kimono. And Tabitha's (Catalina Sandino Moreno) newfound “spider sense” leads her to learn more about her potential connection to Victor (Scott McCord) and the town itself. Yes, there is more. Time travel was confirmed this season with ghostly children wandering around, Jim (Ione Bailey) hearing his dead son's voice through a disconnected phone, and Julie (Hannah Shelamy) unwittingly helping Boyd (Harold Perrineau) from the past! And let's not forget.
It is easy to get confused with so many interesting things happening, and some of these mysterious things get pushed to the background. People like Jade (David Alpay), who hallucinates the dead, is one of them, and has some connection to the mysterious caves beneath the town. I know there are more, but at this point I could write an essay on every single mystery in the show. With so many plot threads spinning simultaneously, “Fromm” runs the risk of losing focus and alienating viewers like myself who are looking for clarity.
Of course, I understand that mystery is the lifeblood of the show and that it thrives on the unknown. However, “Fromm” Season 3 has overstayed its mystery, and most of the filler episodes are just uninteresting character conversations. I for one would like to see more interesting developments. Suspense and shocking developments. I'd be satisfied with just a small fact revealed in each episode.
So far we know that production on the new 10-episode season of From will begin in 2025, with the first episode being released in 2026.
Michael Wright, head of MGM Plus, said in a statement: “From has been a sensation for MGM Plus, capturing the attention of millions of viewers and helping to shine a bright light on the MGM Plus brand. The talented show creators and cast have crafted this wonderful show with great care. We look forward to Season 4 providing the answers that Fromm viewers crave so enthusiastically.”
Executive Producer Jeff Pinkner also said in the same press release: we are thrilled with the support of our fans and MGM Plus partners and are excited to share the next chapter of our story with Fromilly.” By the end of Season 3, the characters will begin to understand why they are trapped in FROM Town: ...... But will understanding help them escape? If so, how.”
These statements reassured me a bit, but we are now in season 3 and with how little we know, it feels like we are still at the beginning of season 1. According to Forbes magazine, the creators “know the whole story up front.” If this is true, my concerns can wait. Let's hope that “From” Season 4 will give us the answers we so desperately need and tie it all together without becoming a rehash of “Lost.
You can stream all three seasons of “Fromm” on MGM Plus.
