Netflix has some great original productions, but it also has an extensive library of shows and movies licensed from other studios.
“A.P. Bio” is one such show that is very underrated. Is it perfect? No. In fact, there is a new program this year that does much of what “A.P. Bio” does, and does it better. More on that later.
But it is interesting. I couldn't stop laughing when I rewatched some clips to jog my memory about this show. So I'm not surprised that it's already surged up Netflix's top 10 to #2 after being added last week; if there's one thing Netflix's algorithm is good at, it's finding ways to bring back shows that didn't get enough recognition.
Let's delve into what “A.P. Bio” is and why one of my favorite underrated sitcoms is a great choice for your next binge-watch.
“A.P. Bio” stars Glenn Howerton (of “It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fame) as Harvard professor Jack Griffin. Or, more accurately, disgraced former Harvard professor Jack Griffin. Having lost his dream job to academic rival Miles Leonard (Tom Bennett), Jack is not happy about it.
As a result, Jack is unable to get his dream job or keep his current one, and is forced to return to Toledo, Ohio, to live with his late mother. He is also forced to teach advanced placement biology at his alma mater, Whitlock High School. [Jack is not a biology professor. The former philosophy professor has no intention of teaching biology to freshmen.
But after a little non-teaching, he realizes that they are very bright high school students and recruits them to take revenge on Miles. Principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt), who realizes what Jack is up to, tries to restrain him while giving him a second chance.
This is the premise of season one. In subsequent seasons, the initial revenge drama will be a thing of the past, and the focus will be on Jack's attempts to write a bestseller to get back on top. In the storyline, Jack uses his students to explore how the people of Toledo find happiness in their daily lives and tries to include it in his book.
Saying that “English Teacher” ran because “A.P. Bio” walked does not give Brian Jordan Alvarez's new Hulu show enough credit. With this show, he has taken social critique to a level that “A.P. Bio” could only dream of.
But when I think about this NBC/Peacock sitcom, I can't help but compare the two. Both feature excellent actors playing brilliant teachers whose personalities are quirky and whose obsessions with their personal lives dominate everything else.
Both also have excellent student casts, which is no mean feat. A.P. Bio would not succeed without a young cast that works well with each other and with Howardon.” [In particular, the acrimonious relationship between Jack, played by Howardon, who refuses to teach biology, and Sarika Sarkar, a high-achieving student who just wants to learn biology, is a sight to behold. But perhaps the best of the young cast is Alysin Snyder as Heather Wilmore. She becomes one of Jack's most trusted assistants as he tries to get back on top of life.
So if you're looking for a new show, here's an old one instead. The A.P. Bio ran for 42 episodes over four seasons, so there's plenty to watch.”
