Valve's Steam Controller was discontinued in 2019, but according to a new leak, the gaming company is working on a sequel and could soon be ready for mass production.
The leak comes from X's Brad Lynch (via The Verge), who says that Valve is working on a Steam Controller 2 (codenamed Ibex) and a rumored wand controller set for VR headsets (codenamed Roy) They say.
“Both are being tooled right now in factories with the goal of mass production. So we know we are in the late stages of commercialization,” he writes.
Both are somewhat surprising, but Valve rumors can have a long tail, and products only really launch when the company feels they are ready.
Lynch did not reveal any details about what the new controller would include. He did, however, respond to comments on the original tweet, where he claimed that the biggest change to the controller would be a change in the size and shape of the trackpad in order to “make it more like a gamepad.”
He provides more information about the “Roy” controllers. Allegedly, these wand-like controllers are for the rumored “Deckard” VR headset. The device is said to be a Meta Quest-style wireless headset; Valve previously released a wired Index in 2019, but as far as we know it is not actively in production.
The Verge once reported on a Valve patent diagram that allegedly gave a glimpse of the Deckard headset. That patent was discovered in 2022.
Lynch found a reference to the controller in Valve's SteamVR code. In an earlier tweet, Lynch revealed that the Roy device could essentially have the buttons of a single gamepad. These include a D-pad, bumpers, triggers, grip buttons, ABXY buttons, and system buttons, which he claims are “some sort of strap.” And “sort of like a strap,” he claims. This suggests that the device can be used as a regular controller when not in VR.
Valve, being Valve, has not announced these alleged devices. Usually, Valve only announces new products when they are essentially in the hands of users.
Still, if Lynch's claims are correct, and the devices are in mass production now, we could see Valve make a surprise announcement at some point in 2025.
