It appears that Apple may break the record for the thinnest phone ever made with the iPhone 17 Air.
There have been a fair amount of rumors about the iPhone 17 Air, also known as the iPhone 17 Slim. According to recent leaks, it may be difficult to make it the same thickness as the iPhone 6. This was due to battery issues, or the cost of developing a thinner substrate. However, recent leaks contradict this information.
The leak in question comes from a recent research note from Hong Kong-based investment bank Haitong, obtained by MacRumors, in which Apple analyst Jeff Pu agrees that the iPhone will be about 6 mm thick. Pu writes, “We agree with recent rumors of a 6mm-thick ultra-thin design for the iPhone 17 Slim model. For reference, the iPhone 6 is 6.9 mm thick and the iPhone 15 is 7.8 mm thick.
This would make the iPhone 17 slim the thinnest iPhone, but certainly not the thinnest Apple product on the market. Currently, that honor goes to the 2024 version of the 13-inch iPad Pro, which is only 5.1 mm thick. However, the iPad has the advantage of being able to expand its battery, something the iPhone cannot do.
There are several rumors about the iPhone 17 Air other than its dimensions. For example, it is expected to feature a new type of OLED display that uses a technology called touch and display integration.
This new display will reportedly be 6.6 inches in size, feature a Dynamic Island, and be inset into an aluminum frame. It will also reportedly feature a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel front camera. Finally, the iPhone 17 Air is likely to feature 8GB of RAM and an A19 chip.
The iPhone 17 Air is an interesting device, but the real issue will be cost. If this phone is too expensive, it will put some users off, especially given the limited camera options. We will have to wait for the official announcement to see what the final product will look like, which is expected to be around September 2025.
