Prime Video appears to have a new hit for fans of crime thrillers. The platform's newest original show, “Cross,” has just received its entire first season, but already reigns at #1 on Prime Video's Top 10 list (as of November 18).
Based on the best-selling crime novels by James Patterson, “Cross” follows a homicide detective who uses forensic psychology to identify and unravel the mind of a killer; the entire season arrived on the streaming service on November 14 and has since been described as “three-dimensional, thorny, and introspective,
The show has received mixed reviews since then, with some critics describing it as “three-dimensional, bawdy, and introspective.
If you're looking for something to get into this week, “Cross” might be an ideal choice. Here's what you need to know about Prime Video's latest crime thriller and whether it's worth streaming...
Cross is a crime thriller show that follows Alex Cross (Aldis Hodge), an astute D.C. homicide detective and forensic psychologist. The story follows Cross as he pursues a ruthless serial killer who frustrates the city with his gruesome crimes.
With his steady partner, John Sampson (Isaiah Mustafa), Cross struggles to stop the killer before too many lives are lost. But the investigation takes a personal turn when a character Cross has struggled with in the past resurfaces and tries to unravel everything he has fought to protect, from his career to his fractured family to his own fragile sense of stability.
“Cross,” for once, critics and viewers seem to agree. Currently, the Rotten Tomatoes critic score is 76%, while the audience rating is slightly lower at 75%. The bottom line is that anything rated as a fresh film is usually (but not always) worth seeing.
Variety's Alamide Tinubu says: With Hodge at the helm and Watkins at the helm, “Cross” is a crime drama with some surprising curves. At the heart of the detective series, it gracefully addresses the anguish of grief, toxic masculinity, and the pitfalls of obsession.” Meanwhile, San Jose Mercury News reporter Randy Myers described it as “worth watching as is, even in its weirdness.”
While book adaptations are hit or miss, Alex Maidy of JoBlo's Movie Network offered reassurance: “Cross is a good mystery with a great cast and a solid, original story that doesn't re-read the original or previous adaptations, yet still enhances the popularity of the book. It's a good mystery with a good story.” [Of course, not all critics enjoyed this crime thriller, says Kelly Lawler of USA Today: “This version of Cross, however, is like mashing up the worst stereotypes about the genre with a slow, overlong season of television. It's like a betrayal. Or maybe it's a double-cross.
The Daily Beast's Nick Shager is also puzzled by the plot's direction: “It's unleashed by the same distortions that plague so many contemporary television productions.”
Not to mention that it is as ridiculous as any attempt to straddle the line between praising and criticizing cops.
Fans of intense crime thrillers with complex characters and plenty of chilling drama should put “Cross” on their watch list. While the film has received mixed reviews, the majority of them are favorable, with most praising Hodge's performance and the emotional depth he brings to Alex Cross. Some critics have noted that the plot sometimes feels too complex, but the engaging characters and risky story more than make up for it.
Whether you are familiar with James Patterson's novels or new to the world of Alex Cross, this Prime Video original is likely to be an engaging binge-watch worth your time over the weekend.
