VIPs, here we go! A little over three years after the twist-filled Season 1 finale, “Squid Game” Season 2 is coming to Netflix on Thursday, December 26. And in the weeks leading up to the Season 2 premiere, we finally have some information about the new episodes that fans have been waiting for.
A social media post from the verified “Squid Game” account revealed earlier this week that the first episode of Season 2 is ominously titled “Bread and Lottery Tickets.” According to the Hollywood Reporter, there will be seven episodes this season in all. seven, down two from the nine total in season one.
So even though Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae), aka Player 456, is no longer in need of money this time around - spoiler alert! The episode title, “Bread and Lottery Tickets,” seems to suggest that the capitalistic horrors we have come to expect from Season 1 will continue in Season 2.
In Season 2, former winners will once again enter the competition, not to win more prize money, but to expose the forces behind the corruption; according to Netflix, the official synopsis for Season 2 is as follows: “Three years after winning the squid bet, player 456 is determined to find out who is behind the squid bet. Three years after winning the squid bet, Player 456 is determined to find out who is behind the squid game and put an end to the vicious squid game. Using this large sum of money to fund his search, Song Ki-hoon begins with the most obvious place to start: finding a man in a sharp suit playing dakji on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the road to the destruction of the organization turns out to be more difficult than he had imagined.
But Player 456 is not the same man we met last season, the actor revealed at Netflix's Fall Edit event in November; according to Tudum, Lee Jung-jae said that while Gi-hoon is eager for a “normal life” and a reunion with his daughter, “he ...... (that) he understands that he has changed in a way that is no longer possible.”
This time around, even the way he approached the character had to change, the Emmy winner told the outlet. But while there are situations in Season 2 where those (qualities) are on display from him, ...... I didn't get that many opportunities,” he said.
