Netflix's latest Christmas romance film, “Our Little Secret,” recently debuted on the platform and quickly took the number one spot. Lindsay Lohan is re-teaming with Netflix after “Irish Wish” and “Falling for Christmas”.
This time, Lohan plays Avery, a woman who unexpectedly spends Christmas with her ex-boyfriend and gets caught up in a holiday nightmare. The twist. It turns out that her current partner is a brother. Critics were quick to weigh in, with some saying the leads are a good fit for “romantic comedy heaven,” while others said it was a predictable holiday movie with nothing new to offer.
We wonder if this new festive film is worth adding to your watch list. Here's what you need to know about Our Little Secret, and what critics are saying about it now that it's the No. 1 film on streaming services...
Avery (Lohan) and Logan (Ian Harding) unexpectedly return to each other's lives when they discover that their significant others are brother and sister. Now ex-lovers, the two must spend an awkward and tension-filled Christmas under one roof.
Issue. Avery and Logan's breakup was never amicable. Old wounds and unresolved resentments threaten to boil over, the festive spirit, and everyone's holiday plans are at risk.
As of this writing, “Our Little Secret” has a score of 44% on Rotten Tomatoes. Considering that “The Merry Gentlemen” was also a flop, I don't consider it a complete disappointment. But these are just opinions, and you may end up enjoying Lohan's new romantic comedy.
As Patrick Cremona of Radio Times says: “I don't think it's going to be a Christmas classic, but Our Little Secret is watchable enough and a cut above streaming festive movies.” Meanwhile, Sarah Masnicki of But Why Tho. says: “Lindsay Lohan and Ian Harding are a match made in rom-com heaven that not even Kristin Chenoweth's frighteningly accurate matriarch can steal the thunder.”
Conor Carey of Keith Loves Movies simply stated, “‘Our Little Secret’ is a delightful Christmas rom-com whose problems are mostly mitigated by a big heart and a delightful cast.”
Unfortunately, there seem to be more negative than positive reviews; Archi Sengupta of LeisureByte says: “‘Our Little Secret’ is somewhat entertaining, but not memorable in the long run.”
Roberto Tyler Ortiz of Loud and Clear Reviews thought it was a fun mess, but not as much as it stood out: “The nostalgic charm and quirky touches provide moments of enjoyment, but the lack of chemistry between the leads and, over-reliance on genre archetypes prevents it from being an outstanding holiday film.”
Judging from these early reviews, Our Little Secret lacks Christmas magic, and Brian Orndorff of Blu-ray.com says exactly that: “‘Our Little Secret’ has no such spirit, and the embarrassment of persistence and a rom-com-like love affair featuring a surprisingly unlikable character, it fumbles with the basics.
If you're looking for the breakout Christmas hit of the year, Our Little Secret may not be it. Critics have pointed out the clichéd plot and the lack of chemistry between the leads.
Nevertheless, if you like heartwarming, cheesy romantic comedies and have all the hallmarks of a feel-good holiday movie, including family drama, romantic tension, and festive decorum, it may be worth seeing. While not a film that will redefine the genre, Our Little Secret is a cozy companion for a chilly evening if you're in the mood for something easy and not too difficult to enjoy this festive season.
I'm not in the mood for that. Check out this incredibly fun Christmas thriller. Also see our guide to new releases coming to Netflix in December 2024.
