'Squid Game' Season 2 Will Change the Way Netflix Shows End, Creators Say

“Squid Game” Season 2 has yet to be delivered. - We are already thinking about the third and final installment of this very popular Korean thriller.

The second and third seasons of this Lee Jung-jae-led drama were filmed consecutively, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently revealed that the script for the second season changed the ending of the entire show.

“I wrote seasons 2 and 3 at the same time. ...... There were turning points along the storyline that led to a series of different events and also led to major changes in the characters,” Hwang Dong-hyuk told Indiewire. [Relatively speaking, we came up with the ending for Season 2 fairly early on. However, the ending for Season 3 actually went in a different direction than what I had originally thought. As I was developing the story and working on the script, I saw a new path I wanted to go down.

Ironically, “Squid Game” was not initially planned for future seasons. As a result, viewers were able to spend more time with Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae) and other rivals and delve deeper into the deadly game, but more episodes meant more pressure for the showrunners.

“When we decided to do season two, the pressure was really high. Could we really pull it off? Would we be able to write something that would surpass Season 1? I was like, 'Yes,'” Hwang said. [But when we finally wrote it and got into the story of Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae) coming back into the game for his own reasons, it worked out much better than I thought it would. We were able to create a more engaging story, come up with more interesting characters, and create a more original and engaging game."

Fans will have to wait a while for Season 3 of “Squid Game” (which will reportedly hit streaming sometime in 2025), but until then, when the seven episodes of Season 2 are released on December 26, Hwang will be able to see how the series finale set up can be seen.

To recap, the official synopsis for the second season reads: “Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 is determined to find the masterminds behind it and put an end to their vicious sport. Song Ki-hoon uses this large sum of money to fund his search, starting with the most obvious: finding a man in a sharp suit playing dakjis on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the path to destroying the organization proves more dangerous than he had imagined.
