Google has released an update that allows users to easily check the temperature of their Pixel phones natively.
In the past, I have written about how important temperature is in regards to smartphones. However, checking temperatures can be tricky and usually requires the use of third-party apps on Pixel phones, and a recent update to the Pixel troubleshooting app now provides a live temperature reading of the device, making it easy to know when the phone is getting too hot Android Authority claims that you had to sideload the app to find this feature,
although this change was originally discovered by 9to5 Google after the update. After downloading, it can be found by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics > Phone is Very Warm. Alternatively, one can access this page by searching for “device temperature” in the Settings app.
This feature is updated in real time and displays four color-coded labels: “cold,” “normal,” “warm,” and “high.” The image above shows that several messages are displayed depending on the device's temperature. According to Google, “the device's temperature is estimated based on multiple internal sensors,” and the best way to warm or cool the Pixel Phone is also suggested.
The dangers of extreme temperatures on cell phones are often forgotten, but can cause serious damage. For example, we recently saw an older Samsung model suffering from a green line after a recent update. There are a few things you can do to cool your phone, we have a full breakdown of the best ways to keep your phone from overheating that can help.
9to5 Google has confirmed that the troubleshooting app update is available for Pixel 6 and later, but does not appear to be a feature on Pixel tablets. The update has also been confirmed for the Pixel Fold, Pixel 8a, and Pixel 9 Pro with Android 15.
