Samsung's next generation of foldable phones could feature larger displays, which would allow the phone maker to keep up with the competition.
One complaint about the Z Fold series is that the screen size has hardly increased at all. For example, the outer display of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is 6.3 inches, while the inner display is 7.6 inches. On the other hand, the outer display of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is only 0.1” smaller, and the main display remains the same. However, the Galaxy Z Fold SE, sold only in China and Korea, has a much more substantial increase.
This disappointed Samsung folding fans, but a recent post on X by display analyst Ross Young hints that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is inspired by a dedicated device he calls the Z Fold 6 SE.
According to Young, “The Fold 7 should be the same display size as the Fold 6 SE. In other words, the Fold 6 SE will basically be the Fold 7”. In other words, the inner display is expected to be roughly 8“ and the outer display 6.5”.
Young also stated that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will grow from 6.7“ to 6.85” and the cover display should be about 4”. This is comparable to the Motorola Razr Plus 2024. While larger screens are great and sorely needed, Samsung needs to make more use of the cover screen on its foldable devices.
I know from personal experience that the outer display on the Z Fold 6 tends to be too narrow for comfortable use. This problem is especially noticeable when the phone is in a case; I would expect the Z Fold 7 to be at least a little wider to make it more usable and comfortable when folded.
An expanded screen is not the only thing that has been rumored for the Z Fold 7. Recently, TM Roh, head of Samsung's mobile division, said he wants the Z Fold 7 to be as thin as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. For reference, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is 8.6 mm thick, while the Z Fold 6 is 12.1 mm thick. This is a significant amount to shave off and it will be interesting to see how they manage it.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is still a ways off, but Samsung needs to come up with something special. The problem is that there is a lot of competition from devices like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. I hope Samsung finds a way to keep the Z Fold series as one of the best foldable phones, but only time will tell.
