Apple promises CarPlay 2.0 in 2024, but no time to actually release it

It has been almost two years since Apple announced an overhaul of Apple CarPlay at WWDC 2022. Apple's website (spotted by MacRumors) now states that the next generation “will arrive in 2024,” but that upgrade has yet to materialize.

The year will soon be over, but it does not appear that CarPlay 2.0 will actually be released.

There has not been much news on the next generation of CarPlay since its initial announcement in 2022: in December 2023, Aston Martin and Porsche revealed several dashboard concepts near the end of the month. At the time, it was reported that the next cars from both companies would feature the new CarPlay in 2024, but that has not happened.

In late January, some new CarPlay features were revealed in the iOS 17.4 code. That code included interior air conditioning, heated seats, FM and AM radio (plus SiriusXM), electric car charging status, tire pressure details, and whether the doors were still open before starting to drive.

At the time, we only knew that Porsche and Aston Martin would support CarPlay 2.0, but Apple confirmed that Acura, Ford, and Honda would also support this model.

At this year's WWDC, Apple did not announce anything about CarPlay in its announcements or press releases. However, there was a developer panel where Apple showed off many new CarPlay design changes. The panel noted that car companies can tweak the design of the display to suit their aesthetics. It pointed to a more customizable CarPlay. The panel did not reveal when the new CarPlay would be available.

Here is what is currently posted on Apple's website regarding the next generation of CarPlay:

“This next generation CarPlay is the ultimate iPhone experience for cars. It brings content to all of the driver's screens, including the instrument cluster. This ensures a cohesive design experience that is the best combination of your car and your iPhone. Each automaker's design will represent your vehicle's personality and brand. Vehicle functions such as radio and temperature control can be controlled directly from CarPlay. And personalization options, from widgets to carefully selected instrument cluster design choices, highlight the driver's individuality.”

Will Apple announce CarPlay 2.0 or something else before the end of the year? Doubtful. However, there were surprise announcements from Porsche and Aston Martin in late December of last year. With three weeks left in the year, maybe there will be a holiday surprise.
