On Day 7 of OpenAI's 12 Days Festival, ChatGPT will finally adopt Claude's project. This will allow users to group chats and data, making it easier to customize ChatGPT to their needs.
The AI Lab is announcing at least one product, service, or feature every weekday through December 20. So far, a variety of announcements have been made, including Sora, ChatGPT Canvas, o1, Advanced Voice, and several “stocking stuffers.”
The ChatGPT project is available worldwide starting today, but is being rolled out slowly, so some users may have to wait a while. They started the rollout during the live stream instead of the awful Christmas joke.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI's chief product officer, joined Drew Schuster and Thomas Dimson, who joined OpenAI when AI Labs acquired Global Illuminations, to announce Projects live.
Projects is a feature I have been waiting for in ChatGPT. It is one of the main things that keeps drawing me back to Claude. For example, I can share dozens of notes and files for the novel I'm writing, and every new chat in Projects has access to that data. There is no need to keep sharing documents every time you start a session.
The ChatGPT project allows you to group custom data, conversations, GPTs, simple chats, and anything else available within ChatGPT.
All chats in a project have access to all information in the project.
Any ChatGPT feature can be used, including SearchGPT, Canvas, Coding, etc.
In the demo, OpenAI showed the ability to start a chat from within a project, add files, and tag existing chats.
An example use of the project is to organize a Secret Santa. This could upload a spreadsheet with a list of rules, budget, and who gets what. Within this, you could override the main instructions you might have given to ChatGPT in general and give specific instructions to ChatGPT just for that project.
Within an individual chat, you could also instruct the AI to incorporate data stored within the chat, adapt the data, or create new tables based on the data.
A word of warning from the demo - be specific; asking ChatGPT to write an email based on data may include “secret” details about who wants what for Christmas.
Another example shown in the live stream on the 12th was coding a personal website ChatGPT builds websites ChatGPT can build websites.
