“Hey Google” is a phrase familiar to anyone who likes to use their Android phone hands-free. However, there are hints from newly announced Google/Samsung products that they will no longer be calling out to Google in exactly the same way in the future.
As part of Samsung's Project Moohan headset and Android XR-powered smart glasses announcement, we saw the use of the modified “Hey Gemini” hotword instead. For example, in the demo video below, the user orders from a Korean takeout restaurant, she calls out “Hey Gemini” for help, and then the assistant helps her figure out what she wants. The assistant then provides advice and translation to place the order, without ever mentioning the name “Google.”
After watching this clip, you probably felt that such a move was inevitable. Gemini is replacing Google Assistant as the helper for Android phones. As famous as Google is, calling Gemini sounds like the future for now.
However, it will be some time before Google Assistant disappears entirely. It has been built into cell phones for a decade before now, and no one expects all users to upgrade anytime soon. In addition, Google Assistant has app integrations such as music streamers that Gemini does not currently have access to.
Project Moohan is confirmed to be announced in 2025, probably at the rumored Galaxy Unpacked event in January. That would, after all, be two years after it was first announced.
We can't wait to try out Project Moohan, or whatever it will eventually be called, which will be the Apple Vision Pro challenger we've been waiting for. Thanks to the arrival of the open-source Android XR, it is inevitable that other companies will try their hand at spatial computing, and 2025 is shaping up to be a good year for AR/VR.
