Apple is accelerating its plans to bring its designs in-house, following a new report that the company will finalize an in-house chip for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity next year.
The report, by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, names the in-house chip Proxima, which will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. which currently makes most of Apple's chips
This should be noted that this is a different part and move from the recent news that Apple will roll out its own-designed modems within the next three years. However, the goal is the same as getting rid of components manufactured by Broadcom and Qualcomm.
According to Gurman, the company's goal, according to unnamed sources, is to develop an “end-to-end wireless approach” in which all components are integrated and more energy efficient.
It is speculated that Apple's tighter control over how devices connect to networks and Wi-Fi hubs will lead to more ways to redesign thin devices like the iPhone 17 Air and wearable devices.
Before that, Apple is expected to launch a chip that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in an updated version of its Apple TV set-top box and a new HomePod mini smart speaker. It will also be in iPhones next year and may be in iPads and Macs in 2026.
This is in line with a report by analyst Min Chikuo in early November claiming that the iPhone 17 will feature Apple's home-made Wi-Fi chip.
The new chip will not match Broadcom's current offering, but will offer the Wi-Fi 6E standard.
Meanwhile, the updated HomePod, which will be available within the next year, was just reported to feature a 6- to 7-inch OLED display. The device is believed to be more of a smart home controller than a speaker. Garman previously said that Apple is working on a version with a wall-mounted iPad-like display and a robotic arm.
The new Wi-Fi chip should allow HomePod to work more closely with other smart home devices. Apple is set to enter the smart home device market next year. Garman even notes at the end of the article that Apple is working on a stand-alone security camera.
