Midjourney is one of the original and most important AI imaging platforms. With continuous updates, it now has over 21 million users and has finally embarked on a new approach to content creation.
Patchwork is an experimental new “infinite canvas” that can be used to create and collaborate on AI image content in a way that maintains a consistent style and personality. using Midjourney's technology, but now independent of the app.
This new app is a “new” version of Midjourney.
The new project is led by Max Kreminski, head of the Midjourney Storytelling Lab, and is being introduced as a “world-building platform.” Midjourney has long promoted the concept, and plans to Midjourney has been promoting the concept for some time and plans to develop it into a 3D world in the future.
After trying it out for a bit, I am not entirely convinced of its necessity. This may be because it wasn't fully functional, or because it is still clearly an early beta release, but it feels more like a gimmick than the future of AI content creation.
At first glance, Midjourney Patchwork looks a bit like the “infinite web pages” that were popular 15-20 years ago, where you could place ads and banners if you had the space.
When you first open the canvas, you will see a start block and a menu bar with items such as characters, portals, and personalization. Tap any of these to add that type of content to the canvas.
You can create characters, locations, etc. within the canvas and link them together as a unified world with a consistent style. If you have created your own style from Midjourney, you can also import it.
Create a new world by adding a portal to the canvas. This will bring up the initialization screen, prompting you to initialize the world style and world concept. A new canvas is then created with simple assets linked to the setup choices.
In theory, when creating new images within that space, they will reference those styles and build consistency by referencing other characters.
According to Kreminski, this is a research preview and requires a Google account linked to an existing Discord-based Midjourney profile. It's kind of a cross between a designer's mood board and a sketchpad, but for AI. However, the current implementation is a bit on the clunky side.
