Voice memos in iOS 18.2 make music creation on the iPhone easier thanks to a new feature.
The iPhone's voice memo feature has many uses, but is also a bit basic. Because the program only captures a single channel, it is impossible to create layered voices, which often makes it much harder to tweak levels in post-production. With the release of iOS 18.2, however, Apple has improved this feature to make it more usable for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max creative projects.
Users with the iPhone 16 can use the Voice Memos app to layer a vocal track over an instrumental track. To showcase this feature, Apple teamed up with Michael Bublé, Carly Pierce, and Greg Wells to detail how they used this feature to record the vocal track for their latest song, “Maybe This Is Christmas.”
It should be noted, however, that acoustics need to be taken into account when recording vocals.
This concept is interesting and the video details its optimal use. Basically, the singer presses the record button and can sing over the instrumental clip. This file is then sent to Logic Pro, where the two tracks can be edited separately.
From a production standpoint, this makes life a lot easier because the editor does not have to synchronize the files after receiving them. It is also possible to send compressed audio files directly to Voice Memos, allowing artists to record whenever inspiration strikes.
iOS 18.2 has many features for those who do not do much music recording. For example, Genmoji can be used to quickly create new emoji in conversation. Not only that, iPhone 16 users can also use the new camera control buttons to access Visual Intelligence features that open up a whole new way to use the camera.
Currently, this feature is locked to the iPhone 16 and requires Logic Pro for Mac 11.1 with macOS Sequoia 15.2 or Logic Pro for iPad 2.1 with iPadOS 18.2 to edit files.
