Barring any major bugs, Sonos seems to have capped off a strange and rough year for its music streaming and management applications by releasing the last update for the Sonos app for 2024.
The update brought several improvements and changes to the iOS and Android versions of the app, and based on the release notes for Android version 80.14.06 and iOS version 80.14.07, here's what's new.
Some things are still missing, such as playlist editing and snooze alarms, which Sonos CIO Nick Millington said in an accompanying blog post will be coming early next year. He added that there have also been requests for things like A to Z scrolling and improved queue management.
In May, Sonos released a completely redesigned Sonos app, which was met with immediate backlash. Since then, the company has backtracked, scrambling to fix what was broken in the app's inadequate rollout and reinstate features that were removed in the redesign.
Sonos staff warned executives about the potential pitfalls of releasing a new version of the app. Obviously, they listened. As a result, Sonos had to delay the launch of several products while it fixed the app.
Despite this, the company was able to release three excellent products after the release of the app, including the impressive Ace headphones, its first foray into this field. Later that summer, Sonos released the Sonos Roam 2 portable Bluetooth speaker, and we immediately put it on our list of best Bluetooth speakers.
This fall, Sonos released the highly anticipated Sonos Arc Ultra. It is a spectacular, if expensive, soundbar that brings a spacious soundstage and reasonable depth to movie viewing. It is one of the best soundbars available.
The app is almost back to 100% functionality. However, surveying the Reddit community, the app is still wildly broken, and everyone wants to go back to the S1 version (as do we, but Spence has repeatedly said it won't happen). Still, most of the posts on Reddit are not complaints about the app, but asking for advice or complaining about other people's speaker placement in their home theaters. Things are slowly returning to normal.
