Best New Shows Available This Week on Netflix, Disney Plus and More (Dec. 23-29)

With only a few weeks left in the year, new TV shows are popping up on Netflix, Disney Plus, other streaming services, and broadcast and cable TV stations.

While admittedly few in number, one of the biggest TV shows returns to the lineup this week: season 2 of “Squid Game.” The Korean thriller show returns with a deadly game of prize-winning players. Also on the schedule is this year's “Doctor Who” Christmas special. Here are the top new shows to check out this week.

Comedian Nate Burgadze, a longtime favorite on the standup circuit, caught mainstream attention last year when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” (“Washington's Dream” was a blast). He returned to hosting again a few months ago, but to little effect (“Washington's Dream 2” was pretty funny). Still, Burgadze is popular and well-liked as a clean comic, and his third special riffs on the man's nightly pizza ordering strategy, wanting a second dog, and relying on a responsible wife. ►The special premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, December 24 at 3 a.m. ET

The “Doctor Who” Christmas special is a beloved tradition. Once only broadcast on the BBC on the same day, the wonders of streaming have made it easy for fans around the world to enjoy the comfort and joy of the show. Nucci Gatova returns as the 15th Doctor, and Nicolas Coughlan of “Bridgerton” joins her as a new character named Joy, who checks into a London hotel in 2024 and opens a secret door to the Time Hotel--to danger, dinosaurs, and the Doctor! ►The special premieres Wednesday, December 25 at 7 p.m. ET on Disney Plus

Netflix's most streamed show to date, the amazing blockbuster series returns with new games, more dangerous thrills and even higher stakes. Last time around, Gihoon (Lee Jung-jae), aka Player 456, gave up the chance to be reunited with his daughter and focused on one goal: to win the game. Three years later, with more knowledge, he once again takes on the game of life and death, competing with new participants for the $456 billion prize. His greatest adversary, however, is a mysterious front man (Lee Byung Hun), whose true motives have yet to be revealed. Episodes 1-7 will be available on Netflix on Thursday, December 26 at 3 a.m. ET
