When Season 2 of “Squid Game” arrives on Netflix on Thursday, December 26, fans of this Korean dystopian drama will no doubt be pleased to see the return of several faces from the show's highly successful first season.

There is, of course, the main character, Song Ki-Hoon (Lee Jung-Jae). He returns to the game after winning as player 456 to take down a corrupt and fearsome competitor from within.

Also returning for Season 2 are Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), the undercover staff leader behind the game; Hwang Jun-ho (Wee Ha-jung), a detective who infiltrates the game in search of his brother; and Recruiter (Gong Yoo), the mysterious man in the suit who first recruited Gi-hoon into the competition.

And behind the scenes, Emmy Award-winning director Hwang Dong-hyuk will direct and executive produce the second season.

Season 2, however, will feature a number of fresh faces. Im Siwan, a member of the Korean boy band ZE:A, will appear as Lee Myung Gi (a.k.a. Player 333). Lee Myung Gi used to be a rich and successful YouTube star, but lost his fortune in a cryptocurrency scam, which had a negative impact on his girlfriend Kim Juni (Player 222), played by Cho Yuri. Kang Ha-neul stars as Tae-ho (Player 388), a former Marine whose macho male persona conceals a deep vulnerability. Park Sung-hoon plays Cho Hyun-joo (player 120), a transgender woman who wants to fund gender reassignment surgery with the prize money from a squid game.

Elsewhere, Lee Jin-wook plays Kyung-seok (player 246). Kyung-seok is a desperate father who participates in a game to win a prize for his young daughter, who has blood cancer and needs life-saving medical care. Yang Dong-geun appears as Park Young-shik (player 007), a gambling addict trying to pay off his debts, and Kang Ae-sim joins as Jang Geum-ja (player 149), a mother who also joins the game to help her son. And Park Kyu Young will play the role of No Eul, a former soldier from North Korea who is haunted by the fact that he had to leave his baby behind across the border.

According to Netflix, the official synopsis for the second season reads: “Three years after winning the Squid Game, Player 456 is determined to find the masterminds behind it and put an end to their vicious sport. Son Ki-hoon uses this large sum of money to fund his search, and starts with the most obvious: finding a man in a sharp suit playing dakjis on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the path to destroying the organization proves more dangerous than he had imagined.
