Movie “Barbie” is now available on Netflix - already in the Top 10

Unless you've been living under a rock for the last year, you'll remember the glorious movie event that was “Barbenheimer”: on July 21, 2023, two of the most talked about films of the year were released: Christopher Nolan's three-hour epic historical drama “Oppenheimer” and, Greta Gerwig's surreal and hilarious film “Barbie.”

“Barbie” was the highest-grossing film of the year, earning rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike and garnering attention at the awards shows.

As a recent mainstream movie highlight and a major pop culture influence at the time, it's really no surprise that the “Barbie” movie is on track to become a streaming hit now that it has landed on Netflix. Arriving on the streaming service this week (Monday, December 16), it is already on Netflix's top 10 movies list.

The movie “Barbie” takes us to a seemingly perfect, pink world, Barbie Land. There, every day is a great day, everyone is impeccably dressed, there is nothing to worry about, life is fun and every day is filled with dance parties. [It was perfect until “Stereotypical Barbie” (Margot Robbie) has an existential crisis and starts thinking about big picture things like death.

The so-called “Weird Barbie” (Kate McKinnon) tells Barbie that it's because people who play with Barbie are unhappy and sends her into the real world to fix things. Upon arriving in our world, Barbie (and stowaways Ken and Ryan Gosling) find that this new society functions very differently from their own.

In addition to Robbie and Gosling, the film Barbie features America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Issa Rae, Emma McKee, Dua Lipa, Nicolas Coughlan, Sim Liu, Kingsley Ben Adil, Nuch Gatwa, Michael Cera, John Cinna, Kate McKinnon, Will Ferrell, Rob Brydon, and many other celebrities, and the narration is by the amazing Helen Mirren.

If you haven't tried it yet, I fully recommend giving the “Barbie” movie a shot. I was totally caught up in the pre-release hype and saw it at least three times in theaters.

“Barbie” is absolutely satisfying on every level. From the acting, to the comic timing, to the script, to the sets and costumes, this movie is a complete delight.

Even if the main character is Ken instead of Barbie, the whole thing is still a brilliantly put together, very, very funny adventure that can be seen and enjoyed again and again. You don't have to take my word for it, as “Barbie” is still highly acclaimed.

As of this writing, the movie “Barbie” still has an 88% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Basically, most of the critics who rated the film gave it great praise.

One example is Empire's Beth Webb, who gave it a 4/5 star rating, praising it as “painfully funny” and “a film that refuses to be pigeonholed,” adding: “Greta Gerwig is a new breed of ambitious, boasting definitive performances from two actors already in their element and delivered a dizzyingly funny blockbuster. Life after 'Barbie' will never be the same again.”

Similarly, in a review for RogerEbert.com, Christy Lemire gave the film 3.5/4 stars, calling it “a dazzling achievement both technically and tonally” and “hysterically funny.”

Critic Clarice Lowry, in a five-star review for The Independent, also called the “Barbie” film “one of the most original, perfectly crafted, and surprising mainstream films in recent memory.”

If I haven't convinced you that “Barbie” is now on Netflix, Tom's Guide still has streaming recommendations.

Also, if you're already streaming “Barbie” on Netflix.
