After announcing the global debut of the OnePlus 13 yesterday, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 13R will appear at the same event. And this lower-priced version could be even more interesting than the regular version.
The newly confirmed launch on January 7 will likely focus on the OnePlus 13, but those who like their phones to be a bargain should have their sights set on the 13R, the sequel to the fabulous OnePlus 12R, which was introduced in early 2024.
What OnePlus has decided to tease us with in the OnePlus 13R's specs is that it has a 6,000mAh battery. This is 500mAh larger than the OnePlus 12R, a phone that has already produced the best battery life test results we have ever measured. With another 9% increase in capacity, we expect it to score even better.
OnePlus also revealed that the OnePlus 13R will feature Gorilla Glass 7i on the front and back, as well as an aluminum body. Victus 2 and Armor Glass. However, we expect it to be as resistant to scratches and drops as promised.
Another small update to the OnePlus 13R is that it is thinner. At 8mm (0.31“) thick, it is 0.8mm/0.03” thinner than the OnePlus 12R.
The announcement also said that both the 13 and 13R will have triple cameras. Since this is not much of a surprise, OnePlus has not told us what type of camera or sensor it will use on either phone to keep us in suspense. We can, however, guess from the specs of the other phones.
We can guess that both the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R will have a main and an ultra-wide. However, the third camera will probably be different, with telephoto on the 13 and perhaps macro on the 13R as it was last year; we hope OnePlus is generous enough to include telephoto on the 13R as well.
We can also look at the OnePlus 13 announced for China and assume that the same version will be available here. However, be careful what you assume to be the same, as the global version and the China-only version may differ slightly.
Whatever it is, the camera appears to have a Clear Burst mode to assist in taking bursts of photos and an Action mode to help capture fast-moving subjects in sharp detail.
Only two color options for the OnePlus 13R have been announced: Nebula Noir and Astral Trail. These star-themed names apparently coincide with the finishes of these color schemes, but OnePlus has not explained further.
It is not clear from today's announcement or yesterday's announcement how many of the OnePlus 13's announced features will apply to both models; features like IP68/69 water and dust resistance and AI enhancements to the OxygenOS interface are welcome on the cheaper model We hope most, if not all, of them are, as they would be.
We will answer this and other questions we think at the January 7 event. However, given that the OnePlus 13 has already been available in China for several months, those who want to buy OnePlus' next flagship model are already holding out for a while.
