“Cobra Kai” Season 6 is the final chapter of the hit Netflix series, but it is not the end of the “Karate Kid” franchise.
Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for the upcoming “Karate Kid: Legend,” in which “Cobra Kai” star and original Karate Kid Ralph Macchio reprises his role as Sensei Daniel Larusso. Larusso's earlier comments confirm that this latest installment of “My Goat World” is set “after the events of ‘Cobra Kai’” and that the show and movie are all canonically connected (h/t ScreenRant).
However, Makio is not the only character returning from the “Karate Kid” franchise. Jackie Chan also returns as Mr. Han, the kung fu master who trained Jaden Smith's Dre Parker in the 2010 reboot of the 1984 original. This time, however, he is training kung fu prodigy Li Feng (Ben Wang), who will turn to Mr. Daniel to help Li fuse his kung fu knowledge with Miyagi-do karate to become the ultimate martial artist.
As noted above, this latest installment in the Karate Kid franchise features a new “Karate Kid” played by Ben Wang. The Chinese-American actor is not a total newcomer to the world of feature films, but this is by far his biggest role to date. He was discovered in a worldwide casting search of more than 10,000 actors and landed the role partly because, like Li Feng, who he plays in “The Karate Kid: The Last Legend,” he is a karate and kung fu master.
However, despite being in the same world as “Cobra Kai,” the trailer sets a much more serious tone for the film than the Netflix show. However, “Karate Kid: The Last Days of a Legend” begins dramatically. Li is evicted from his Beijing home and forced to move to New York City with his mother after a family tragedy. If this setting sounds familiar, it bears a striking resemblance to the backstory of Daniel, played by Makio in the original Karate Kid.
Like Daniel, Li struggles to fit in in his new city, but eventually finds solid ground in karate and eventually participates in a karate tournament. However, since Li's background is in kung fu, his teacher, Mr. Han, asks his old friend, Mr. Miyagi's disciple, Daniel Larusso of Miyagi Road, to train Li.
In addition to Makio, Chang, and Wang, “Karate Kid: Legend” also features Joshua Jackson as Victor (who appears to be Li's nemesis), Shawnette Renee Wilson as Sensei Morgan (who appears to be unrelated to Owen Morgan of “Cobra Kai”), plus Sadie Stanley, Ming Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Wyatt Oleff, Danny McBride, and Jennifer Lynn Christie in unannounced roles. The film will be released theatrically on May 30, 2025, but based on Sony's current licensing agreement, it will eventually be released on Netflix should distribute the film to Netflix.
