Windows 11 will finally bring features that make webcams more useful.

Microsoft is finally giving the Windows 11 PC camera the attention it has been craving. That's because it will soon offer an “advanced camera” feature that many have been missing: effective use of the webcam.

Windows 11 PCs will soon support a multi-application camera that will allow multiple apps to access and stream to the PC's camera simultaneously, as noted in Dev Channel's new Windows 11 Insider Preview Build. As stated in Dev Channel's new Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, the app is intended to improve accessibility and was developed by the hearing impaired community to “enable simultaneous video streaming to both the sign language interpreter and the end viewer.

That's not all. Microsoft will also offer a “basic camera” feature, which - as expected - will limit the functionality of the webcam to the basics. Initially, this seems useless, but it is intended to improve debugging and ensure that the camera works at its most basic level in case there are problems with other features.

These features are very welcome, especially for those looking for ways to use the camera to stream from multiple apps at once. Whether you are a remote worker attending multiple meetings or a gamer looking for a way to stream from multiple apps, the multi-app feature offers Windows 11 users a new way to use their webcam.

Both features are currently being rolled out in the Dev Channel to Windows 11 Build 26120.2702, and an advanced camera options page in the settings will later be available to all Windows 11 users.

As Microsoft has stated, there are plans to offer more options in the advanced camera settings, including a third option that allows users to select media types such as webcam resolution and frame rate.

Those with access to the Windows Insider Dev Channel can check out the advanced camera options by going to Settings > Bluetooth and Devices > Camera and clicking the Edit button.

In addition to general bug fixes and updates, you can get a sneak peek at what the new build adds to Windows 11. This includes:
