Top 5 New Movies Available This Week on Netflix, Max, Disney Plus and More (Dec. 17-23)

The week before Christmas, the best streaming services are celebrating the last new movie releases of 2024, with Netflix, Max, and Disney Plus each adding new releases to watch over the Christmas period.

This week, don't miss Max's first release, “Jury No. 2.” This legal thriller is Clint Eastwood's latest (and some say last) film about a young man struggling with a ridiculous ethical dilemma. A very entertaining film, it made my list of favorite movies of the year. Other films that finally made it to Hulu include Netflix's war drama “The Six Triple Eight” and the horror thriller “Cuckoo.”

If you're looking for something new to watch this week, I've compiled the top new movies arriving on streaming services below. Also, be sure to check out our list of the best new shows of the week.

“Blink” is a moving and uplifting documentary about the Pelletier family. Edith LeMay and Sebastien Pelletier are loving parents who faced a nightmarish situation when three of their four children were diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare and incurable disease that causes severe visual impairment. With their children now blinded by the genetic disease, they embark on a journey that takes them around the world to experience the beauty of the world.

The family's strength, resilience, and curiosity are on full display as they visit breathtaking destinations and enjoy once-in-a-lifetime adventures together. Most importantly, however, the Pelletier family proves that no matter what comes next, they will not let it ruin their present. Blink is a critical hit, scoring as high as 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.”

Streaming on Disney Plus beginning December 20

“Cuckoo” seems to have all the ingredients necessary to become a cult classic, and after a limited theatrical release and a period on PVOD, may give this horror thriller its greatest popularity yet! It is now available on Hulu, where it will not be available. Directed by Tilman Singer and starring Hunter Schaefer, “Cuckoo” follows Gretchen, a 17-year-old American who moves abroad to live with her distant father in the German Alps after her mother dies.

Unsettled by her foreign surroundings, Gretchen begins to have terrifying hallucinations and hear strange noises. As a result, shocking family secrets come to light and Gretchen's world changes forever. Also starring Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick, “Cuckoo” is an inventive thrill ride anchored by strong performances and inventive twists from Schaefer and Stevens.

Available for streaming on Hulu beginning December 20,

“Small Things Like These” is a very different kind of Christmas movie. While many films in this genre are loud and colorful, this Irish drama is understated, with a sobering tone and relaxed pace. The bleak subject matter can make it difficult to follow at times, but that shouldn't deter you from streaming it over the Christmas vacations. Cillian Murphy's imposing lead role is reason enough to watch, and by the end, you'll discover a renewed sense of hope for the season.

Set in 1985, Cillian Murphy plays Bill Furlong, a hardworking coal merchant and family man with a troubled childhood. Before Christmas, Bill discovers a teenage girl trapped in the coal shed of the local convent during a delivery. This leads to the revelation that the Catholic Church has taken control of the town, and Bill faces ostracization from the community for insisting on what is right.

“Jury No. 1. You don't want to miss this legal thriller, which is said to be Clint Eastwood's last film. If it is true that the movie legend is leaving the silver screen with this film, it will be the end of a truly great career. Jury No. 2 is one of the most entertaining films of the year and will keep audiences on their toes until the very end and have them debating the ethical dilemma at the heart of the film for hours after the credits roll.”

Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult) is a recovering alcoholic and a pregnant father. Being separated from his pregnant wife is bad enough, but when the trial begins, Justin is horrified to realize that he is actually (inadvertently) the perpetrator of the crime, not the man currently on trial. Also starring Toni Collette, J.K. Simmons, and Kiefer Sutherland, “Juror No. 2” is a must-see legal thriller.

Streaming on Max starting December 20

Netflix is looking to end the year strong with “The Six Triple Eight,” a new World War II drama by Tyler Perry. Fortunately, the war film has already received positive reviews. Nevertheless, it is unlikely to be the kind of film that will be involved in the awards race.

Combining an ensemble cast that includes Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Dean Norris, and Oprah Winfrey, “The Six Triple Eight” focuses on the black, all-female 6888 Central Mail Directory Battalion, tasked with dealing with a three-year mail backlog. The film focuses on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a black, all-female unit tasked with dealing with a three-year mail backlog. Facing discrimination and harsh wartime conditions, these heroes united for their country and delivered a powerful message of hope to those on the front lines.
