Magic Mouse is arguably one of Apple's biggest design blunders. Regardless of what you think of the mouse or what it can do, everyone agrees that the placement of the charging port is appallingly stupid. Thankfully, that may change in the next few years.
In his Power On Newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a “complete overhaul” of the Magic Mouse. This means that the new mouse may place the charging port in a more sensible location, rather than on the underside of the mouse.
Garman cites other complaints that the Magic Mouse is not ergonomic and comfortable. Hopefully Apple will address these complaints as well. It would allow users to appreciate a comfortable design every day.
The downside is that Gurman does not expect the new Magic Mouse to arrive at any point in the next 12 to 18 months. He notes that the new mouse is still in the prototype stage and could take months or years of development before it is released.
In other words, the current Magic Mouse design just celebrated its 15th birthday and apparently still has some life left in it, despite the charging port blunder that occurred nine years ago. In fact, Apple just released a new version of Magic Mouse that replaced the Lighting port with USB-C. There was no difference in functionality or overall design.
Garman did not give any other details about what this new Magic Mouse will feature. We can only hope that all the problems with the current Magic Mouse are fixed and that they do not create new problems in the process.
