A live camera will soon be available on ChatGPT.

Hard to believe that six months have passed since the first demo of OpenAI's visual AI, which was said to be able to identify everything and even solve mathematical equations, but we may finally be approaching a deployment of sorts.

As discovered in the latest ChatGPT beta code, OpenAI's app now has a reference to a “live camera” video feature that essentially adds “eyes” to its very impressive (and conversational) advanced voice mode.

The code for version 1.2024.317, first published by Android Authority, reveals “live camera capabilities,” “real-time processing,” “audio mode integration,” and “visual recognition capabilities.”

This will allow users to open a webcam while speaking with Advanced Voice and get live feedback on what they see before them. This is similar to Project Astra with real-time visual analysis that Google expects to be available.

Strings found in the beta version of the ChatGPT Android app suggest that a live camera feature may be part of the ChatGPT beta in the near future.

In a demonstration of OpenAI's Spring Update in May, the video feature was able to recognize things such as dog and balling behavior while remembering important information such as the dog's name.

Another demo showed someone using the ChatGPT Live Camera while sightseeing in London, pointing out details of different locations and landmarks.

While Advanced Voice was rolled out to everyone, including the web, the Live Camera was quiet for months after the announcement.

Android Authority also stated that they “found a warning for users advising them not to use the live camera feature for live navigation or other decisions affecting health and safety.”

This was definitely one of the most impressive announcements we have seen from OpenAI so far, so expect news soon.
