One of the biggest problems with using a smartphone at night is the strain on the eyes, but new features may help alleviate this problem.

Google recently released the first developer preview of Android 16, which has many new features to help Android users. However, one of those new features caught the eye of Android Authority's Mishaal Rahman, and in a recent post to X, Rahman revealed a new feature that will replace the current Extra Dim mode.

The feature is called “Even Dimmer” and was first spotted in an early preview build of Android 15. Android Authority was able to get the feature working in the second Android 15 beta and gave an idea of how it would work They gave us an idea of how it would work. The feature was not part of the final release, however, and some users have reported that Even Dimmer appears on devices running Android 16.

The biggest difference between Extra Dim and Even Dimmer is how it is turned off and on. Both features must first be turned on by going to Settings and then to Accessibility. Extra Dim, however, must always be toggled on and off from the Quick Settings tile.

Even Dimmer, on the other hand, is controlled by a brightness bar, which feels more natural without the possibility of forgetting to turn it off and on.

Android 16 has brought many changes to some of the best Android phones, but arguably the biggest is the change in the number of releases per year. According to recent reports, Google plans to split its major SDK packages between Q2 and Q4 of 2025. However, Google has stated that normal quarterly updates will continue as expected.

Currently, only the Pixel 9 is showing this feature as of this writing. So we will have to wait for the next developer preview to see if Even Dimmer appears on the best Android phones.
