iPhone17 hints at Pro features after years of waiting

The iPhone 17 may finally get the feature we've been begging Apple to add for years. According to a new report from the supply chain (via 9to5Mac), non-Pro models may finally offer a “high refresh rate” instead of staying at 60Hz for another generation.

High Refresh Rate has been a Pro-only feature for the last few years, with Pro and Pro Max models offering adaptive refresh rates of 1-120Hz via LTPO display panels. This is a fairly standard feature for flagship devices, but models like the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have always missed out on this feature, for reasons unknown. Thankfully, that is about to change.

This is not the first time we have heard this rumor about the iPhone 17. Display analyst Ross Young previously claimed that the ProMotion display would be included in non-Pro models, similar to the ETNews report. While the supply chain report does not specify exactly what ProMotion is, it is quite likely that Apple will choose that particular display technology. That is, if this report is true.

The main advantage of ProMotion is that it offers twice the refresh rate of current iPhone displays. This means improved responsiveness and a smoother display experience. By comparison, 60Hz looks very jacked up. The adaptive nature also helps save battery life, as the iPhone can reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz if the full 120Hz rate is not needed.

Finally, setting it to 1Hz also allows for an always-on display that does not consume battery power. This is a feature not available on the iPhone 16 or other non-Pro iPhones, but Pro models have enjoyed this feature for years.

Even with the possibility of ProMotion, many upgrades are expected for the iPhone 17. It is also almost certain to feature the new A19 chipset, but there are rumors that it will be manufactured using an upgraded version of TSMC's 3nm process. This should at the very least slightly improve performance and energy efficiency, even if 2nm chips are still some way off.

The iPhone 17 may feature a 24MP selfie camera for the first time on an iPhone. There may also be an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air that will replace the iPhone 17 Plus. This model may make some sacrifices, such as a single rear camera lens, in order to offer a lightweight, ultra-thin design.

The iPhone 17 Pro model may also feature a narrower dynamic island, along with a new “low-dialectic TEE” display (which improves power efficiency as well as display performance and durability). In other words, it's something you'll want to have on your phone, even if its effects aren't immediately apparent. Both Pro models are expected to stick with the titanium frame, maintain the durability around that screen, and perhaps have an upgraded 12GB of RAM for better AI capabilities.

There is much more to learn about the iPhone 17 series, but you can check out the iPhone 17 hub for the latest news and rumors.
