Suno v4 has been released and this AI music generator is better than expected.

Suno, the leader in artificial intelligence music generators, has finally released its long-awaited v4 model. It now offers longer songs, improved timbre, and more natural vocals in a variety of genres.

The AI startup first released its original model as a Microsoft Copilot plug-in last December. This plug-in was one of the first to combine music and vocals to create full songs. The release of v3 in March of this year was the breakthrough moment.

One of the biggest problems with the previous model was the somewhat robotic vocals. Version 4 completely changed this, creating songs that were indistinguishable from human performances.

The new release came as Suno faced lawsuits from Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and Universal Music Group. They accuse Suno and competitor Udio of allegedly training the underlying model in unauthorized copyrighted music. Suno states that this is “fair use” under U.S. copyright law.

Suno v4 not only upgrades vocals and overall sound quality, but the startup is also working on related features such as covers and personas.

Personas allow users to create custom vocalists based on previously generated songs, ensuring a consistent singing style across tracks. This is now working in v4 and will make vocals clearer.

Covers used to be limited in use, but now you can create new versions using uploaded sounds or different Suno tracks. I used it to create a full song from a riff I had in my head for years.

Suno also released a new feature, Remaster, to upgrade tracks created with older models to v4 quality.

Finally, there is a new lyric model that comes with v4 called ReMi. This is only available in 'custom mode' and is much more creative and free than the lyric model in earlier versions of Suno (which is still accessible and is the default).

Here is an example of a song called Rust Never Sleeps created in Suno v4

It took many attempts to get this song into the 'Grunge' genre as specified by Tom's Guide How To Editor Kaycee Hill. All previous attempts resulted in a country style; somehow just adding “Rust Never Sleeps” and “Grunge” was interpreted by Suno v4 as good old country rock, so we decided to play up the lyrics with a more explicit prompt I decided to.

This track, created in Suno v4, is in the rock genre and is titled “Winner Stays On.”

This was a title and genre suggestion from Tom's Guide UK editor Jeff Parsons. A Rock Song with a Title” was created using a simple text prompt, and was arranged to use the Epic Rock genre for better output, as the other genres sounded ‘country’.

This track from Suno v4 was made when I was barely awake and called “Foggy Mornings”

I woke up for work with the flu and my first thought was “my brain is not working this morning” So I put that alone in Suno v4's ReMi lyrics generator and let it do its thing. I did not specify the genre.

Suno v4 is a huge step up from any previous model in realistic music generation; after a minute or so, it is easy to forget that it is a self-generated AI track.

This allows anyone with an idea to create a song for a loved one, a song for a marketing video, or a song for a video game; forget AI playlists, this allows you to create your own Thanksgiving song list.

You might not want to use the upset ReMi lyrics generator when writing about that slightly suspicious uncle no one wants to visit; as Suno warns, “It may generate content that you find offensive.
