At the Microsoft Ignite 2024 event today, the company announced that the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S VR headsets will include Windows 11. The company said it will bring “full functionality” of the operating system to the headsets.
This means that while using the Quest headset, users can access Windows from a local PC or a cloud version of Windows (using Windows 365). Microsoft states that the connection takes “a few seconds.”
During the conference, Microsoft said that using Windows with Meta Quest is like “a private, high-quality, large multi-monitor workstation.” You can see a sample of this in a teaser video released by Microsoft.
The apps will be supported by a program Microsoft calls Volumetric Apps to be displayed on the headset; at Build 2024 in May, Microsoft showed off how these apps work. In a demo at that time, a person checks out a 3D diagram of an Xbox controller.
The company announced that developers can sign up to access an API that will allow them to build plug-ins for new and existing 3D Windows apps.
Meta has actively promoted the open source capabilities of its operating system and devices. Microsoft announced its partnership with Meta in May.
Previously, dating back to 2022, Meta Quest Pro began supporting Xbox Cloud gaming, essentially “putting Xbox on your face.” Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hinted at an Xbox-themed Meta Quest, but it is unclear when that device will actually arrive.
Windows on Quest will be available in December as part of a public preview.
