Bloomberg's Mark Gurman claims that Apple's new smart home tablet concept stems from the possibility of “revisiting the idea of making an Apple-branded TV. iPad will influence the company's TV plans and serve as a central hub for later product concepts.
This is not Apple's first foray into the TV manufacturing business. The Apple-based TV set was first proposed and primarily carried by Steve Jobs. It utilized OLED technology, but the project was inevitably scrapped in favor of the best streaming devices like the Apple TV 4K.
The Apple TV could spur the growing and volatile TV market, which is being pushed by cheaper Chinese designs. It would be even more exciting if it took advantage of Apple's new innovative tandem OLED design, and would be a rare opportunity for Apple to enter a whole new space with something truly breathtaking. Apple may end up offering the best TV, but only time will tell if that will be the case.
Despite shelving plans to develop its own TVs years ago, Apple may be about to shift its sights back on this market. The tech giant tried to manufacture its own TVs not once but twice in the late 2000s and 2010s, but neither project came to fruition. [But according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is reassessing its development resources and trying to get its hands on a wide range of home products. Gurman cited examples such as “mobile robots, privacy-focused home cameras, and speakers,” and added, “They may even revisit the idea of making an Apple-branded TV.
This new TV from Apple could rely on the possibility of something like the iPad, called the Smart Home Hub, made primarily to control Apple's smart home devices. It will tout Siri and Apple Intelligence like a tablet and mirror similar products like the Google Nest Hub.
Again, the Apple TV screen itself is just a concept and is still in the early stages of development. An Apple TV screen would be an interesting new product that could easily compete with manufacturers like Samsung and LG, but we will have to wait a bit longer for the Apple TV screen to fully take shape.
But what will Apple's smart TV look like, which will no doubt be quite expensive, much like the $3,499 Vision Pro, the Apple TV screen will no doubt feature an OLED panel, much like the early designs that were shelved It will.
Several photos were released in 2017 via FlatpanelsHD highlighting the possibility of an Apple OLED TV. Today, manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and Sony produce the best OLED TVs, but cheaper Mini-LED designs from TCL, Hisense, and Roku dominate the market.
Apple may be able to mount a serious competition in the OLED market against the backdrop of Panasonic's return to the U.S. market. Apple's OLED Smart TVs may feature a tvOS built on a tandem OLED panel design with nanotexture upgrades similar to those found on the M4 MacBook Pro,
minimizing screen glare.
The nanotexture alone would be a pretty decent foil to the market dominance of anti-glare coatings on Samsung and Samsung S95D OLED TVs. The recently released Panasonic Z95A has the best speaker system on the TV market.
It is still too early to tell, and this is all based on speculation. The reason is that Apple could drop its TV production efforts any time soon. As noted above, the company's TV strategy will depend on how successful the Smart Home Hub is, but there is no doubt that the Apple OLED TV could be something special.
