Samsung fans may not have to wait as long for a cheaper version of the company's beloved flip phone as we thought.
The Korean tech giant was one of the early adopters of the foldable phone form factor and initially one of the better adopters of the technology. However, the company's efforts to upgrade its foldable phones appear to have stalled, at least compared to more recent releases like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Another problem is that compared to devices like the affordable Nubia Flip 5G, Samsung's phones are too expensive for mass adoption.
A recent post on X by display analyst Ross Young (via Android Police) suggests that Samsung is planning an inexpensive foldable for 2025. This is consistent with another recent report from a Korean outlet that said Samsung is aiming to release such a phone along with the Galaxy Z Flip 7. It should be noted, however, that neither source has yet confirmed a date, so there is considerable leeway.
Releasing a cheaper version of the foldable along with the main version would be an interesting move. As mentioned above, one of the biggest complaints about Samsung devices in general is the high cost of entry. For example, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 was priced at just over $1000, while the Nubia Flip 5G was less than half that. The biggest challenge facing Samsung is where it can cut costs, especially with the potential price increase for the Galaxy S25 series.
We may have an idea where those costs will be reduced, thanks to a recent leak that revealed one key specification. Rumor has it that Samsung is considering using the Exynos 2400 chip in the Galaxy S24 model outside the US. If this is accurate, it would help keep the cost of the device down. The same leak also states that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will feature an upgraded Exynos 2500.
At this point, we don't know enough about Samsung's inexpensive clamshell phone, but the release date is a good start. The biggest question, however, will always be how much it will cost. For the time being, we have to wait for an official announcement that may be made with the next Galaxy Unpacked.
