OpenAI is offering ChatGPT Plus subscribers unlimited access to Sora during the holidays. This is for “relax queue” and a chance to see what the AI video generator can really accomplish, although video generation will take a bit longer.
Typically, subscribers to the $20/month plan get 50 video generations per month with no mechanism to increase video generation other than paying $200/month for the ChatGPT Pro plan.
CEO Sam Altman wrote the following to X. “The GPU will be a little busier in the second half of December as work winds down.” “So we're giving all Plus users unlimited access to Sola via the Relax Queue during the vacations!”
Other restrictions on Plus plans still apply, such as video resolution being limited to 480p for 10 seconds and 720p for 5 seconds. Plus subscribers also cannot use Sora to animate images of real people or AI-generated people.
Sora was finally unveiled on the third day of the 12 Days of OpenAI event after almost a year of notice from the AI Lab; it was first announced in early 2024 and was superior to any other AI video tool at the time.
While others have caught up, Sora still offers some impressive features. Even with a relaxed cue, videos were found to be created in less than a minute.
It is unclear how long the unlimited generation campaign will last, but we suspect it will end by early January. So if you don't want to spend $200 a month for unlimited access to Sora, now is your chance to try it out.
OpenAI is working on a pricing plan exclusively for Sora and will announce details in the new year. This could include an unlimited Sora subscription that is decoupled from ChatGPT; the reason Pro is more expensive is the increased computing power behind the o1-Pro model and other advanced models.
If you want to continue making AI videos after the Sora promotion ends, Runway offers unlimited use for $95/month, or you can get unlimited basic generation from Haiper for $10/month (but this includes watermarking and no commercial use).
